Language study

“If I had not done language study I would not have had the responsibility for leading a camp for young people from the area. I would forever have been the guest speaker working by translation and would have been prevented, always a few steps further away, from the privilege of being let into people's hearts.”

An Interserve Partner in Pakistan.

Another essential part of cross-cultural ministry is language learning. Language acquisition is essential if our Partners are to be effective cross-cultural workers. By investing time in learning the local language our Partners demonstrate that they value and appreciate the local culture and are able to be fully independent. Again, this process takes time but the benefits are huge – so huge, in fact, that Partners are generally advised to spend at least one year focussing mainly on language study. This probably sounds like a lot, but it’s an essential part of our vision for high-quality, long-term service.
