Purnata Bhavan - a home for women in the grip of HIV Aids and their soon to be orphaned children
Needs - £2,200 for medical costs for a year / £1,500 provides food for a year / £400 for outings and picnics for the children for a year / £1,200 for cleaning and hygiene for the home for a year.
Purnata Bhavan is a home three hours east of Mumbai, in India, which cares largely for homeless women and children affected by HIV Aids. The children (sometimes with their mothers) come to the home in need of shelter. They are often outcast by their wider families because some member might have died of AIDS. The shame of sickness is, sadly, a big deal in South Asia.
Actress and Interserve ambassador, Emma Rigby, says, “I hadn’t really thought much about what justice was until I heard about Purnata Bhavan. The home tries to help children get back on their feet and find a place back in society, even though, in many cases, their mothers may themselves be dying. It’s so scary – and so sad to see the children who know that one day soon they will lose their mothers and become orphans.”
The home, run by Christians but open to all who need love and care, seeks to house them and provide education, spiritual input and trauma counselling.
